The Presence leaves theTemple

I had actually thought not to post this until Pentecost but sometimes the simple awe of the Living God is both a help and comfort.

Twice in the history of Israelis recorded the Presence of God or Kavod leaving the Great Temple. 264Both times was the result of the government and religion being so corrupted there was no way back.

Ezekiel 9:9 “Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness: for they say, The LORD hath forsaken the earth, and the LORD seeth not.

10 And as for me also, mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but I will recompense their way upon their head.

11 And, behold, the man clothed with linen, which had the inkhorn by his side, reported the matter, saying, I have done as thou hast commanded me.”

The theocratic government had proven unviable in the hands of men. Over time men corrupt themselves. It started with the easing of the Laws of God and then the lengthening and addition to it. Some classes ended up “more equal” than others.

Ezekiel 10:1-19 records the Presence of God or Kavod(Face of God) leaving the Holy of Holies265 and going out of the Temple through the East Gate.266 The East Gate faces the Mount of Olives. It was here that the Presence of the Lord went after it left theTempleand stayed there until it ascended to Heaven.267Ezekiel 11:22 Then did the cherubims lift up their wings, and the wheels beside them; and the glory of the God of Israelwas over them above.

23 And the glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city.”

 268 Acts 1:12

“Moreover, at the festival which is called Pentecost, the priests on entering the inner court of the Temple at nightfall, as their custom was in accomplishment of their ministrations, stated that they first became aware of a commotion and a roar, and after that the voice of a great multitude saying “We are departing hence” (War VI, 299).

This was written by Josephus at the end of theSecondTemplethis is repeated and recorded by Rabbis, Christians, as well as the Romans.

“… A sudden lightning flash from the clouds lit up theTemple. The doors of the holy place abruptly opened, a superhuman voice was heard to declare that the gods were leaving it, and in the same instant came the rushing tumult of their departure.” Histories, 5:13 Cornelius Tacticus

The Presence, or Glory of the Lord, or Holy Spirit moved to theMount of Olivesfor 3 . years as a witness against theTempleand the people from 66 CE to 69 CE.

Rabbi Jonathan “abode on the MOUNT OF OLIVES hoping that Israel would repent, but they did not; while a Bet Kol [a supernatural voice from heaven] issued forth announcing, Return, O backsliding children [Jer. 3:14]. Return unto Me, and I will return unto you [Mal. 3:7], when they did not repent, it said, I WILL RETURN TO MY PLACE [Hosea 5:15]” (Midrash Rabbah, Lamentations 2:11). — Secrets ofGolgotha, by Ernest L. Martin. 84.

“Believers in Christ congregate from all parts of the world, not as of old time because of the glory of Jerusalem, nor that they may worship in the ancient Temple  at Jerusalem, but…that theymay worship at theMount of Olivesopposite to the city, whither the glory [the Shekinah Glory]of the LORD [YEHOVAH, YHVH] migrated when it left the former city.” (Eusebius’ book Proof of the Gospel Book VI, Chapter 18 (288)).

The importance of this is that at the advent of every major change in the paradigm of the peopleof God, God Himself stamped it. For the Christian it is of no small consequence that thisparticular place is chosen. This is where the ascension of Jesus took place268and this is fromwhere He would return. For the earliest “Church” this belief was so held that this was where thefirst “Christian” cemetery was located, so they would meet Him. For our benefit this also showsHe will not come from anywhere else.
